Cranial Base Surgery

Cranial base surgery or skull base surgery refers to surgical procedures performed at the base of the brain. The surgery is focused at the bony partition between the dura, fibrous protective covering of the brain, and the surrounding structures. Tumors can arise from surrounding structures and secondarily invade the dura and brain or they can arise from the dura and brain and secondarily invade surrounding structures.

A surgical team consisting of a neurotologist/skull base surgeon and a neurological surgeon usually perform this type of surgery.
