Vestibular Neuronitis
Vestibular neuronitis is the term used to describe a condition of dysequilibrium or vertigo originating from the balance nerves that is not associated with a hearing loss. Usually patients experience a cold, runny nose or sore throat shortly prior to onset, suggesting a viral cause. Once the viral infection subsides, the unsteadiness resolves. The time course of recovery is unpredictable.
The avoidance of vestibular suppressants or medications that suppress the balance system appears to hasten recovery. Also the more the balance system is used, the faster the brain can adapt to changes that are occurring within the balance system.
