The temporalis muscle is pulled down exposing the bone over the brain. A rectangular piece of bone is temporarily removed off the dura or covering of the brain. At this point some spinal fluid is drained from a catheter placed in the back. This allows the brain to relax. The dotted line shows additional bone that needs to be removed.
