Clival Chordoma

A clival chordoma is a malignant tumor of the clivus. The clivus is a portion of bone located at the base of the skull.

Etiology for Clival Chordoma

A clival chordoma arises from embryonic notochord that is present before birth.  A tumor arises when the notochordal elements mutate and begin to grow abnormally. The reason for growth is unclear.
