Encephalocele/Meningocele

An encephalocele is a region of herniated brain. The term meningocele refers to herniated dura (covering of the brain).

Diagnosis for Encephalocele/Meningocele

Diagnosis of encephalocele or meningocele is made based on clinical suspicion arising from the patient’s history, physical exam, and symptoms.  MRI is the study of choice to evaluate an encephalocele or meningocele.  The diagnosis can also be made by direct visualization during surgery in the affected area.
