An encephalocele is a region of herniated brain. The term meningocele refers to herniated dura (covering of the brain).

A portion of brain has herniated through the temporal bone and dura into the middle ear.

An encephalocele is a region of herniated brain through bone. The term meningocele refers to herniated dura, which is the covering of the brain. A combination of herniated brain and dura is called a meningoencephalocele.
